Volunteer Position/Role Title:  Translator - Education & Advocacy

Position/Purpose: 

The FSHD Society Translator is a key volunteer role dedicated to increasing the accessibility and reach of the Society’s educational and support resources. This individual will assist in translating printed and digital materials for both patients and healthcare professionals into various languages, helping to ensure that individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds can fully engage with and benefit from the Society’s programs and services. Translation needs will be ad hoc and may include opportunities to provide live or virtual interpretation during events. 

Key Responsibilities and Tasks: 

  • Translate printed and digital resources (e.g., brochures, handouts, presentations, web content) for both healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients into targeted languages 

  • Adapt translated materials to ensure clarity, cultural relevance, and accessibility for the intended audience 

  • The Translator will work closely with the Director of Education to prioritize translation projects, identify content gaps in different languages, and ensure materials are accurate, culturally appropriate, and audience-specific 

  • Review existing materials to assess language accessibility and determine if updated translations are required 

  • When possible, attend virtual or in-person FSHD Society events (e.g., webinars, conferences) to provide live or recorded translation/interpretation support 

  • Maintain confidentiality and cultural sensitivity when handling patient-facing or clinical information 

Skills Needed/Qualifications: 

  • Multilingual Expertise – Fluent in Spanish and English, with experience translating both clinical terminology and community-focused health education 

  • Fluent in English and at least one additional language, with strong written and verbal communication skills in both 

  • Ability to translate at either: 

  • A medical/clinical level, suitable for healthcare professionals, or 

  • An accessible, layperson level, suitable for patients and caregivers from diverse backgrounds 

  • Experience in translation or interpretation (medical background a plus, but not required) 

  • Culturally Competent – Understands the nuances of communication across cultures, ensuring materials are not only translated, but truly understood 

  • Detail-Oriented – Carefully reviews and edits translations to ensure clarity, accuracy, and tone are appropriate for the intended audience 

  • Flexible & Collaborative – Works closely with the Director of Education to identify community needs and align on project priorities 

  • Tech-Savvy – Comfortable using translation software, video conferencing tools, and digital document platforms 

  • Mission-Driven – Deeply believes in the importance of language justice and making healthcare accessible for all   

Location/Setting: 

  • In-Person events, such as Connect, 360s, etc.  

  • Virtually from home or from office/clinic setting 

  • Zoom meetings/conference calls as needed 

Length of Appointment, Schedule & Time Commitment: 

  •  Ad-hoc
